The second sign is sluggish recovery after an antechamber cycle. A healthy box pulls back to baseline within 20 to 40 minutes; a poisoned column takes hours, or never quite arrives.<\/p>\n
Watch the regeneration exhaust. If the bake releases an organic odor, visible condensate, or a photoionization detector reading that climbs during the temperature ramp, solvent is being driven out of the media. That confirms residue reached the column.<\/p>\n
Inspect the catalyst granules when you get the chance. Fresh copper catalyst has a uniform color and a free-flowing texture. Poisoned media shows dark coking, sticky agglomerates, or excess fines, while chlorinated solvent attack leaves a greenish-grey residue and a sharp acidic smell.<\/p>\n
One further indicator is asymmetric column behavior. On a dual-column box, if one column recovers its capacity after regeneration and the other does not, the difference points to localized exposure rather than a system-wide leak.<\/p>\n
Not all solvents poison the same way. Aromatic and ether solvents such as toluene, xylene, and THF adsorb reversibly. A proper high-temperature regeneration under reducing gas usually returns most of the capacity.<\/p>\n
Chlorinated solvents are a different story. Dichloromethane, chloroform, and dichloroethane decompose on hot copper and form hydrogen chloride and copper chloride. That reaction does not reverse during baking; it consumes the catalyst and can corrode the column vessel and downstream tubing.<\/p>\n
Silicone oils and vacuum greases are just as unforgiving. Their heavy fractions crack into carbonaceous deposits that plug sieve pores and blind copper sites. Regeneration strips some of it but leaves a permanent capacity penalty.<\/p>\n
High-boiling polar solvents such as DMF, DMSO, and NMP also stick. A standard 200 to 250 \u00b0C bake cycle may not fully desorb them, so capacity drops a little after every exposure.<\/p>\n
Regeneration is the standard response to glove box purifier column poisoning, but it only works when the poison is reversible. If the first cycle fails, run one more. Two consecutive failed regenerations is the practical cutoff. Past that point the media is not coming back, and each extra bake cycle costs another day or two of box downtime.<\/p>\n
Decide with the solvent history in hand. If chlorinated compounds, silicone oil, or heavy grease were ever in the box, replace the catalyst and sieve instead of cycling them. Those poisons are cumulative and effectively irreversible.<\/p>\n
If the history is only toluene or hexane and capacity returns but fades within a week, the column is not the real problem. Fix the transfer procedure, add an organic vapor filter ahead of the purifier loop, and cut the exposure at the source.<\/p>\n
