Anaerobic Glove Box Troubleshooting: Why Your Atmosphere Won’t Drop

You are in the middle of a delicate experiment, and your oxygen display is stuck at 15 ppm. You have checked the antechamber doors, greased the seals, and verified your supply lines. If the numbers refuse to budge, your anaerobic glove box troubleshooting checklist needs to shift focus straight to the purifier column.

The Science Behind Column Saturation

Inside the purification loop, your gas travels through a bed of copper catalyst and molecular sieves. The copper targets oxygen, while the sieves trap moisture. Over months of operation—especially if you frequently transfer volatile organic solvents or open the inner doors—these materials fill up.
When saturation occurs, the gas bypasses the active sites without losing its impurities. Your chamber is essentially running on a dead loop, recycling dirty gas back into your clean workspace.

How to Isolate a Saturated Catalyst Bed

To confirm the purifier is the root issue during your anaerobic glove box troubleshooting workflow, try this test:

  1. Turn off the main circulation blower for 30 minutes.
  2. Monitor the baseline drift of the atmosphere sensors.
  3. Turn the blower back on at 100% capacity.
If the O2 or moisture level jumps sharply the moment the gas begins flowing through the column again, your catalyst bed is releasing trapped impurities rather than pulling them out. It is saturated, and you need to run a full 16-hour thermal regeneration cycle immediately to reset the chemistry.
